Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father's departure the family of Ford, they were looked after by her grandmother, mom, and godparents. When she was a little girl, she struggled with obsessive-compulsive disorder, and also suffered from anxiety because of the word association. Ford was intrigued by the field of acting during her teen years, and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she was a poor choice for this school. Ford later applied for a spot for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut, appearing as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in TV shows such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. Tate also performed regularly in the theatre, eventually joining in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate was recognized for her comedy stand-up and became part of her resume in the year 1996.
